Colour Harmony

Most beginners think the secret of a good painting is to use as many colours as possible in theire paintings, when quite the opposite is true.

By limiting the number of colours in your palette you are more likely to produce harmony in your paintings.

Many artists carry just three primary colours in their palettes.

On Mixing Colors and Harmony

(It’s oils but the principles are the same in watercolour.)

My colors consist of: cerulean blue hue, ultramarine blue, quinacridone rose, cadmium orange, cadmium lemon yellow, and cadmium yellow medium. That’s it, six colors plus titanium white! I could have gone with a cadmium red light instead of the orange, but this works for me and I can make that color very easily if I need to.
